CHAPTER 29

DAWSON

“Dawson? It’s me. Violet.”

As if he could ever mistake that breathy little voice for anybody else.

“What’s wrong?”

Because if she was calling him at six a.m., something wasn’t right.

“Uh, did you leave me a message last night?”

“What kind of a message?”

She couldn’t be talking about that kiss, could she? No, he shouldn’t have done it, but…

“On the mirror in the bathroom.”

What the fuck?

“That wasn’t me. What does it say?”

She began speaking faster, sounding panicked now that he’d confirmed her fears. “It says ‘Did you miss me?’ I didn’t notice until I got out of the shower, but the mirror steamed up and there it was.”

“Don’t touch it. I’ll be there in five minutes.”

“Five minutes? Where are you?”

“I just walked out of the sea.”

Since he couldn’t sleep last night, he’d gotten up early and gone for a swim. When he left the Navy, he’d thought he wouldn’t miss the water, but after months of flitting between cities and mountains and the desert, he’d started craving the wet stuff. And what better place for a dip than the public beach near Violet’s temporary home? Not only were the tides good, but there was also a public shower block nearby, which saved him from driving back to Brax’s apartment.

Except this morning, he bypassed the shower, pulled on a T-shirt, grabbed the duffel bag from the trunk of his car, and ran straight to the pool house.

Violet was pacing in the bedroom-slash-living room when he arrived, wearing a fucking towel.

“Give me strength,” Dawson muttered to himself. How was he supposed to concentrate when one gentle tug would reveal that perfect body? In his swim shorts, there was little to hide his true feelings on the matter either.

Deep breaths.

“Can you show me the message?”

She looked him up and down. “You were really in the sea? I thought you were joking. You’re… I’ve never seen you in anything but a suit before.”

“Thought I’d try the casual look this morning.” He checked her out too, concentrating on the mundane rather than lingering on the good parts. Violet might have been acting brave, but her hands were trembling and she kept biting that bottom lip. If she knew what that did to him… “The message? In the bathroom?”

She’d closed the door, and even though the steam had mostly dissipated, the words were still visible.

“This definitely wasn’t here before? When did you last shower in here?”

“The day before the party, I think? No, no, I was too tired, so I just washed my face and put dry shampoo in my hair. Uh, it would have been the day before that. Last Wednesday.”

Shit. Either someone was playing a particularly unamusing prank, or Violet’s stalker had paid a visit. Time to call the boss again.

Except when Dawson pulled the phone out of his bag, she grabbed his hand.

“Who are you calling?”

“David.”

“No! I’m not meant to be sleeping in here.”

“We have to tell him.”

“Please?”

Dawson phoned Lucas instead, and five minutes later, there were three of them squashed into the tiny bathroom with the shower running.
